Four peptide labels can look similar online. They don’t mean the same thing.
If you’re trying to understand peptide claims, start by sorting the category before judging the promise.
1. FDA-Approved Peptide Medicines
These are specific drug products reviewed by the FDA for specific uses. That review looks at evidence for safety, effectiveness, dosing, labeling, manufacturing quality, and the condition being treated.
That doesn’t mean every use of that medicine is proven for every goal. It means a defined product was evaluated for a defined indication.
2. Compounded Peptides
Compounded medications are prepared by pharmacies under particular circumstances, often when a patient-specific need exists. They can play a role in care, but they are not the same as FDA-approved products.
A compounded version generally has not gone through the same FDA approval process as a branded drug product. That matters for how you read claims about quality, consistency, dosing, and evidence.
3. Research Peptides
“Research peptide” usually means a compound being discussed or sold in a research context, not as an FDA-approved consumer medicine.
Some may have interesting early science behind them. Some may have limited human data. Some may be discussed far beyond what has been studied.
The key question is not “does it sound scientific?” It’s “what evidence exists in humans, for this use, with what safety data?”
4. Wellness Claims
This is the broadest bucket: podcasts, social posts, testimonials, clinic ads, longevity claims, recovery claims, body composition claims, and before-and-after stories.
Some claims may point to real areas of research. Some may stretch early findings. Some may leave out dose, product source, side effects, follow-up, or regulatory status.

Regulatory status doesn’t tell you everything. It does tell you what kind of evaluation has happened, what is known, what remains uncertain, and how carefully claims should be interpreted.
A reasonable reader doesn’t need to panic or dismiss the whole field. They need to ask better questions:
- What exact peptide is being discussed?
- Is it FDA-approved for this use?
- Is it compounded?
- Is it being sold for research only?
- What human evidence supports the claim?
- What safety information is missing?
- Who is making the claim, and what are they selling?
